My artist statement

I have several different reasons for creating art. One reason is that I enjoy being able to recreate images I see or have seen and I think it’s a useful tool for the future. It can be used just as a fun tool for when you’re messing around with friends and it can help show what you are visualizing, whether that thing is a person, place, or even an idea. Another reason, is that I hate how in memories, bits and pieces of an image just disappear for me. Whether it is what someone was wearing on this day, or who is in the background in this memory. It is a thing I think about a lot, so one way that I have found to preserve every object from a scene, and in the future perhaps a memory, is through art. That is also a big part of when I draw or paint, I try to incorporate a lot of detail. When choosing something to draw, I always challenge myself to get better, usually a specific thing but with other things in it to make other areas of my drawing or painting better; perhaps I feel uncomfortable drawing geometric shapes, so I will specifically choose to make something about a building to make myself better and more comfortable in that area.

As mentioned earlier, I tend to like detail in my artwork, so I usually pick a medium that can support that style, for drawing it can be most things like pencil, pen, charcoal, pencil crayons, and usually on paper but I would not be opposed to other mediums that are good to use lots of detail on. In paintings, I like to use acrylic, but other types of paint are good as well, they are just a bit harder or take longer than acrylic. I would be interested in the future to experiment with spray paint as well because it is very cool and quick. When making a piece of art, I usually start with the focal point of the piece, whether it’s a face or something else, detail it, and then move outwards from there, making sure everything is proportional and exact.

As of right now, I am working on a pencil and colored pencil drawing of me and my girlfriend that I plan to do my best on, and then give to her after I am finished because she loves art and I know it will make her happy. I started off drawing stick figures like everyone else, and then more fleshed out people, until I got into drawing detailed people. I only drew one of my first detailed people a year or two ago, then again in most of my drawings after, but always a single man. As of this year, I am starting to draw women as well, first a ballerina, and now my girlfriend. Male and female bodies are quite different so it is interesting to try and figure out so  it is a nice challenge. Something that is quite difficult that I am challenging myself on right now is drawing very familiar faces. I personally have never drawn myself so it is an interesting experience.
